In the treatment of muscle injuries, the PRICE method is known. The method is commonly used as first aid in muscle and joint injuries. The aim is to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and facilitate healing. The term PRICE can be described as: protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation.
Although PRICE is not related to remedial massage, remedial massage can be used as part of the healing process for muscle injuries or musculoskeletal problems. In these cases, remedial massage can be one component of the PRICE method to help speed up healing.
Here's how remedial massage can be integrated into the PRICE method.
- Protection: If the patient has a muscle injury or musculoskeletal problem, make sure the patient informs the therapist of the injury before getting a muscle repair massage session. The therapist can provide additional protection during the massage session by modifying the technique or avoiding the injured area. Protecting the injured area from excessive movement is also a concern.
- Rest: Remedial massage can assist in the resting process by relaxing tense or injured muscles. The therapist will focus on reducing tension and improving blood circulation to the affected area. It is possible for the body to recuperate in a better direction.
- Ice: Remedial massage therapists may use cooling techniques, such as cold stones or using cold materials, to relieve inflammation in the injured area. This can help reduce swelling and pain.
- Compression: Light compression techniques can also be used in remedial massage sessions. The therapist can apply gentle pressure on the injured area to help reduce swelling and improve blood circulation.
- Elevation: While elevation generally means lifting the injured area above the level of the heart during rest, patients may not do this during a remedial massage session. However, after the session, patients can continue to elevate the area at rest to help reduce swelling.
It is important to discuss and talk to the therapist about any musculoskeletal injuries or problems before the remedial massage session, so that they can customize the technique and treatment according to the patient's needs. Also, it is important to make sure to adhere to any medical and rehabilitation advice that may have been received.
